Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to question certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
