The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
