Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
